Specialty Hospitals

ScionHealth is proud to be a national leader in specialty hospital care, providing long-term acute care and specialized rehabilitation for tens of thousands of medically complex patients each year, including those recovering from serious injury or illness. Our specialty hospital division is made up of 75 long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs) in 21 states – operating under the trusted brands of Kindred Hospitals, Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals and Solara Specialty Hospitals.

Types of Care

Licensed as acute care specialty hospitals and certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), ScionHealth’s specialty LTACHs are high-level care settings that provide continued acute care that is distinct from the care provided in lower-level care settings such as skilled nursing facilities. Our specialty hospitals provide physician-led treatment to medically complex patients with a wide variety of conditions, including:

  • Respiratory Failure and Other Respiratory Conditions
  • Sepsis
  • Heart Failure and Other Cardiac Conditions
  • Kidney Failure
  • Traumatic Brain Injury, Stroke and Other Neurological Conditions
  • Complex Wounds
  • Post-Intensive Care Syndrome
  • Complex conditions with multiple comorbidities

Providing Next Level Care

ScionHealth specialty hospitals take an interdisciplinary approach to care and rehabilitation with patients receiving daily physician visits and consults from specialists, including, but not limited to, general surgeons, pulmonologists, cardiologists, pharmacists, and infectious disease specialists, as needed. Our interdisciplinary care teams also include ICU nurses with training in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, wound nurses, dietitians and social workers. Our patients also typically have access to on-site services such as radiology, laboratory, pharmacy and dialysis.

Our clinical liaisons work closely with medically complex patients’ physicians and other referral sources to determine whether a patient would benefit from our specialized care and rehabilitation. Because treating medically complex patients is our specialty, we are well-equipped to accept stable patients from a traditional hospital even if they are still in critical condition. Prompt transition to our LTACHs can improve outcomes and patient satisfaction by reducing length of stay in and readmissions to the acute care hospital.

Our Commitment to Excellence

ScionHealth’s specialty hospitals are accredited by The Joint Commission or the Center for the Improvement in Healthcare Quality. Demonstrating our commitment to excellence in patient care, all 60 Kindred Hospitals nationally have earned at least one Disease-Special Care Certification from The Joint Commission in Respiratory Failure, Sepsis, Wound Care, Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and Brain Injury Rehabilitation, and many have more than one certification. In addition, several Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals have been designated CIHQ Centers of Excellence for Long-term Acute Care, Respiratory Therapy and/or Nursing Services.

Among our areas of expertise, ScionHealth’s specialty hospitals have long been considered national leaders in pulmonary care, with ventilator management and liberation being a major focus of our teams. Respiratory therapists are available 24/7 at our hospitals. Patients also have access to physical, occupational, and speech therapy in-house. As part of our Move Early Program, we incorporate movement into the recovery plan as soon as is safe for all patients, including those on mechanical ventilation.
