Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center Honored as ‘2024 Top General Hospital’ by Leapfrog

Leap Frog Top Hospital 2024

Carolina Pines is one of only 36 hospitals nationwide to receive this elite designation for excellence in hospital safety and quality.

HARTSVILLE, South Carolina (December 17, 2024) – For the second year in a row, Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center (CPRMC) was named a Top General Hospital by The Leapfrog Group, one of the most competitive awards American hospitals can receive. The Leapfrog Group is a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers that advocates the highest standards for healthcare safety and quality. CPRMC and other Leapfrog award-winning hospitals were honored at the 2024 Leapfrog Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner in the Washington, D.C. area.

“This is an incredible honor and quite the accomplishment by a team of professionals who are devoted to our patients and to making Carolina Pines a great hospital,” said Bill Little, CEO of Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. “Every day, they bring a passion to their work and an unwavering commitment to their patients, striving to provide the safest, highest-quality care and the best outcomes and experiences. Earning this recognition – now two years in a row – validates the hard work and dedication of our staff, our partners, and our volunteers.”

More than 2,400 hospitals were considered for the Leapfrog annual awards. CPRMC was one of only four hospitals in South Carolina to receive the Top General Hospital distinction. A total of 134 Top Hospitals were selected, including:

  • 8 Top Children’s
  • 36 Top General
  • 15 Top Rural
  • 75 Top Teaching

The quality of patient care across many areas of hospital performance is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, practices for safer surgery, maternity care, and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication errors. The rigorous standards are defined in each year’s Top Hospital Methodology.

“Protecting patients from preventable harm is central to The Leapfrog Group’s mission,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center has set the standard for patient safety, earning the prestigious distinction of a Top Hospital. This elite honor reflects the exceptional efforts of the entire team and places Carolina Pines among the nation's elite in health care. Congratulations to all who made this remarkable achievement possible.”

To qualify for the distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest standards for quality and patient safety, and achieve top performance in their category. The honor caps off an exciting year of accolades and achievements for Carolina Pines. The hospital earned the coveted “A” Safety Grade in the Leapfrog Group’s spring and fall ratings of 2024. In October, Carolina Pines Chief Nursing Officer Christy Moody was named to Becker's 2024 listing of "CNOs to Know." In August, the hospital was one of only three to earn ScionHealth’s “Platinum Award,” the highest honor presented as part of the 92-hospital company’s National Quality Strategy. In July, Carolina Pines CEO Bill Little was named to Becker’s 2024 listing of “Community Hospital CEOs to Know.” And in April, Carolina Pines’ employed Medical Practice again attained recognition as a Patient-Centered Medical Home from the National Center for Quality Assurance.

“All of these recognitions are greatly appreciated by our team,” said Little. “That said, there is no better validation of our work than every time we discharge a healthy or healthier patient who came to us in their time of need. But these recognitions are nice honors for our hospital and the community that supports us.”
