Publication awards top rating to SAUs in Brea (CA), Greensboro (NC), Hollywood (FL)

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Dec. 1, 2024) – Three of the Subacute Units (SAUs) located within ScionHealth’s Kindred Hospitals have been recognized with “High Performing” ratings in U.S. News and World Report’s assessment of the Best Nursing Homes for 2025.

Since 2009, U.S. News’ annual Best Nursing Homes ratings have assisted consumers in need of either short-term rehabilitation or long-term care for themselves or a loved one.

The Subacute Units at Kindred Hospital Brea (California), Kindred Hospital Greensboro (North Carolina), and Kindred Hospital South Florida – Hollywood each achieved the designation of “High Performing” in at least one of the categories of Short-Term Rehabilitation or Long-Term Care.

The Kindred Hospital Brea SAU was rated “High Performing” in both Short-Term Rehabilitation and Long-Term Care – one of only 119 nursing homes in California out of nearly 1,200 that were reviewed to earn the distinction in both categories.

The Greensboro SAU and Hollywood SAU were designated “High Performing” for Short-Term Rehabilitation.

In addition, the Brea and Hollywood SAUs received overall “5 out of 5” overall ratings from U.S News.

U.S. News gives the designation of Best Nursing Home only to those that satisfy U.S. News’ assessment of consistent performance in quality measures, according to the publication.

Licensed as skilled nursing facilities, Kindred’s subacute units are located in Kindred Hospital buildings but operate separately from Kindred’s long-term acute care hospitals while serving their own patient/resident population. Subacute care is specially designed to provide short-term inpatient rehabilitation for those who are recovering from an injury or illness, or to provide compassionate inpatient care to those facing multiple medical problems or illnesses for a longer period of time.

“We are proud to see the Kindred Hospital Subacute Units at Brea, Greensboro and Hollywood once again recognized with top ratings in U.S. News and World Report’s Best Nursing Homes for 2025,” said Kim Gibbs, ScionHealth Senior Director of Operations for Subacute Units. “Our SAU caregivers work hard every day to provide excellent inpatient medical care and rehabilitation services to members of their communities in a safe, comfortable, caring environment. This recognition by U.S. News demonstrates the high quality of care that our subacute units provide and the positive impact they make on our patients.”

For the 2025 edition, U.S. News rated more than 15,000 nursing homes on patient and resident outcomes, such as infection rates; staffing levels; potentially inappropriate reliance on antipsychotic drugs; health inspection results and other indicators of quality.

“U.S. News' Best Nursing Homes ratings put patient well-being at the forefront and provide families with the objective information they need to make confident decisions about their loved ones' care,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “These annual ratings recognize U.S. nursing homes that deliver high-quality care, earning consistent positive outcomes, and support American families in finding local nursing homes that prioritize safety and well-being.”

To calculate the Best Nursing Homes ratings, U.S. News evaluated each nursing home’s performance using a variety of quality measures obtained from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The U.S. News methodology factors data such as resident care, safety and outcomes. Both short- and long-term ratings include data on nurse staffing, use of antipsychotic drugs and success in preventing ER and hospital visits. The long-term care rating also includes measures of whether a home changed ownership and how well they were staffed on weekends.
